Multiple first responders were called to Lake Gage Saturday evening after a boat started spinning out of control.

According to Indiana DNR Law Enforcement, someone called 9-1-1 around 7:13 p.m. after several people were involved in a boating accident.

The caller said 10 people had been ejected from a boat and it was still running unmanned.

Video sent to NewsChannel 15 showed the boat with an open throttle moving in circles.

Several local citizens on the lake helped take the seriously injured people to shore where E-M-S and fire units could treat the victims.

Sabrina Minser, who provided an eyewitness account of the incident, told NewsChannel 15 her husband escorted a paramedic out onto the water via a jet ski.

Two people were flown to Parkview Hospital in an air ambulance with serious injuries. One suffered a skull fracture, and the other had part of their lower arm amputated.

Others with less serious injuries were taken to a hospital in Angola.

Meanwhile, conservation officers launched a patrol boat and warned residents to move their docked boats and clear the area as the runaway boat continued to circle by the shoreline.

According to a press release, Conservation Officer Jake Carlile threw a rope from the patrol boat to try and stop the propeller of the runaway boat. The boat ended up hitting a dock and then ran into the back of the patrol boat Carlile was driving, disabling it.

The entangled rope eventually slowed the unmanned boat and Carlile was able to use a nearby watercraft to pull up next to it. He then jumped onto the boat while it was still moving and brought it to a stop.

Initial investigations show Dominique Effinger, 20, of Fort Wayne, was operating the ski boat on Lake Gage at a high speeds when the boat cut into a violent turn and sent all 10 people on board flying out of the boat.

Police say alcohol was a factor in the accident. Effinger was arrested for Boating While Intoxicated causing injury and a Minor in Possession of Alcohol.

The incident remains under investigation.
