Underneath its Toyota badging, the Yaris hatchback is a Mazda2, which we haven’t seen in the US since 2014. Thanks to the Mazda-Toyota partnership, we get a sporty hatchback with a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 106 horsepower, a Sport driving mode, and MacPherson strut front suspension. However, the new Yaris is available only with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The Yaris Hatchback is small -- 10 inches shorter than its sedan counterpart. It offers 15.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats up, which is slightly less than competitors like the Nissan Versa and the Honda Fit.

The interior will look familiar to anyone who’s been inside a Mazda recently. You’ll get Android Auto and Apple CarPlay that you can control via the 7-inch infotainment touchscreen or the rotary knob. Two trims are available, LE and XLE, with the upper trim adding leatherette seating, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, and automatic climate control.

No word yet on pricing, but we expect it to compete with other subcompact hatchbacks like the Nissan Versa and Chevy Sonic. Look for it on dealer lots this summer.
