Shows like this are filled with weird buzzwords and catchphrases. Take the new Sonata, for instance, and its commitment to Hyundai’s latest design language, titled “Sensuous Sportiness.”

The front is this car’s most dramatic feature, with a low, sloping hood, and these chrome strips running from the car’s front window pillars to the headlights. Flip a switch in the cabin, and they illuminate, becoming daytime running lamps.

I’m not sure what “Sensuous Sportiness” means, but Hyundai has made a point of saying the all-new 2020 Sonata doesn’t look especially Hyundai-like. Looking at these stunning lights, I’m not sure it looks like anything else on the road, either.

Inside, you’ll quickly notice the 10-and-a-quarter-inch infotainment touchscreen, although it doesn’t dominate the space like some others. It supports split-screen functionality, meaning you can keep your music and navigation visible at the same time. You’d better believe that this beautiful piece of equipment won’t come standard on all Sonatas, though, so if you like it, prepare to pony up for a higher-level trim.

The new 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine is expected to be more powerful and more efficient, and the new architecture under this Sonata’s skin means the car should drive through corners better, too. Tack on niceties like a head-up display, wireless smartphone charging, and Hyundai’s new digital key, which lets you lock, unlock, and start the car from your smartphone, and the 2020 Hyundai Sonata might be worth a test drive when it arrives at dealerships in October 2019.
